How secure are my goods?

We take the security of your items very seriously. Our facility is staffed during opening hours, is equipped with state of the art security systems, 24/7 CCTV, smoke detectors and fire alarms.

Are all storage units clean, dry and secure?

Yes, We review the cleanliness and security of our facilities regularly on a daily basis to ensure our high standards are maintained.

Who has access to my unit?

You are the only person who has access to your unit, and you are the only keyholder. You can add additional users such as friends or family onto your agreement by contacting us. Additional access fobs for these users are available upon request from reception. Additionally issued fobs will be subject to our replacement/non-returned fob fee. 

Please note: As detailed further in our storage terms and conditions. In certain circumstances Police, Fire service, Trading standards and HM Revenue & Custom agents do have the legal power to access units upon appropriate notification to the facility.

Do I need a padlock?

Yes, all our units and lockers secure with a padlock which you retain the key for. If you require a padlock, we stock a comprehensive range onsite available for purchase online or instore.

Do I need to pre-book a storage unit?

We recommend reserving a unit in advance of your planned move in date to avoid disappointment. To reserve a unit is very easy, either fill in our online booking form or call to book over the phone. We take a £50 security deposit against damages at the point of booking, which is fully refundable if you don’t move in.  

How do I pay for my unit?

We will invoice you on a monthly basis for your storage unit and enhanced liability cover. This can be paid via credit card, debit card or bank transfer. For convenience we will set up a recuring card payment upon signing your storage agreement that will be billed on your renewal date every month. 

For security reasons we cannot accept cash or cheques as payment for storage rentals.

How far in advance can I reserve a unit?

You can reserve a unit up to 30 days in advance of your move in date. If you wish to reserve a unit further in advance please get in touch with our team to discuss options.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

Yes. All customers are required to pay a refundable £50 security deposit before storing. The deposit is fully refundable provided you have returned your access fob and there is no damage to the room after you have vacated.

Can I change the size of my unit?

Yes. If the amount of items you wish to store changes before or during your stay, please inform a member of staff who will help to accommodate your request.

Do I need to insure my goods?

Yes, as per industry standards and under our terms and conditions, all stored goods must be insured throughout their period of storage. 

Not all household insurances will cover you whilst your possessions are in a self-storage facility, so please check the terms of your insurance. If it is required we offer protection for your goods via our StoreProtect Enhanced Liability service.

What is StoreProtect Enhanced Liability?

Our standard storage agreement restricts our liability to you to for loss or damage to your goods to negligence only up to a maximum of £100 and requires you to arrange insurance cover for your goods for the Maximum Replacement Value of your property. As an alternative, we can accept an enhanced liability for loss or damage to your goods which may occur during storage.

StoreProtect is an agreement by us to accept an enhanced liability over and above our Restricted Liability under our Storage Agreement for loss or damage to your Goods as described in the StoreProtect Addendum for an additional charge. If you do not opt for StoreProtect, you must provide evidence within 30 days of moving in, that your goods are adequately insured in line with their Maximum Replacement Value.

It is important that you declare the full replacement value as new of your goods. It is your responsibility to inform Big City Self Storage in writing if your items in storage exceed your declared value (see the Proportional Reduction Condition in the Store Protect Addendum)

What items can I store?

You can store anything you like provided they don’t fall into one of the following prohibited goods categories:

  • Food or perishable goods
  • Illegal drugs or unlicensed goods
  • Live animals or plants
  • Flammable or hazardous goods
  • Fireworks, explosives or firearms
  • Hazardous or toxic substances
  • Currency, deeds or securities
  • Waste/environmentally harmful goods
  • Any items that emit fumes or odours

How much notice do I need to give to cancel my unit?

We require 14 days’ notice to cancel your unit. You can move out with less notice, but you will continue to be charged to the end of your notice period

Do I need to clean my unit out once I’ve left?

Yes, please leave your unit in the same condition it was at the beginning of your rental; you may be charge if it’s not left in a suitable condition.

Is the building temperature controlled?

No. The temperature can fluctuate within our facility and will naturally be warmer in the summer than in the winter.

Do the units come with shelving?

All our units are empty rooms, though you are welcome to add shelving to any room if required. All shelving or racking added to a room must be free standing and not attached to the walls or structure of the room in any way.

What is the average height of your units?

All our units have an average height of 8.5ft (2.6m)

What happens if I lose my fob and/or key?

In the unfortunate circumstance that you misplace the keys for your padlock, please speak to a member of staff to arrange for the removal of the lock on your unit.

We can re-issue lost fobs at the charge of £10 per fob.

Are there toilets on site?

Yes, we have toilets located inside at our shop/reception.

Do you have trolleys on site?

Yes, we have a range of trolleys, furniture dollies and wheeled cages available to use free of charge.

Am I allowed to take my pet in with me when I visit?

No pets of any kind are allowed in the storage area. Please keep pets safely in your vehicle at all times. The only exception to this would be guide dogs for the disabled.

Are children allowed in the storage area?

Yes, children are allowed in store as long as they are supervised at all times by an adult.

Can I use a storage room to sleep in?

No, we do not permit the use of storage units for sleeping in.

How old do you need to be to rent a storage unit?

You need to be 18 years of age to rent a storage space.
