Making the most of the space in your storage unit

Making the most of the space in your storage unit

When you use a self-storage unit, it’s important to know how to utilise the space as best you can, fitting more in but also storing everything safely.

Plan ahead!

Before you start packing up your belongings, take some time to plan how you'll organise your storage unit. Consider creating a floor plan or layout that includes designated areas for different categories of items. This will make it easier to find what you need later on.

Quality boxes

The best way to maximize the space in your storage unit is to pack things neatly into boxes. Boxes allow for things to be easily stacked. Be sure to invest in quality boxes – whether they’re cardboard or plastic – especially when you’re packing them with heavy items. Strong, durable boxes will make stacking them in your unit much more manageable, as they won’t collapse from a heavy weight on top of them.

Shelving

Buying some simple yet sturdy shelving units to put into your storage unit is a great way to utilise the vertical space. Though you may think that adding these shelves will take up more space, it will be better for your items in the long run and make it easier to retrieve necessary items from the unit.

Vertical storage

To make use of all the space in your unit where you can, try and tilt furniture that is wider than it is tall (like a sofa) onto its side to use the vertical space, Just make sure it’s wrapped up and securely placed so it doesn’t fall and damage your other items.

Disassembling Furniture

Although this might be an extra step, disassembling furniture will help open up a lot of space in your unit. Dismantling items such as bed frames, tables, desks and chairs are a great way to maximise the space in your storage unit. Always keep screws, nuts and bolts together in a sealable bag and attach to the underside of your furniture for safe keeping.

 Nesting Items

Wardrobes, chest of drawers, and other hollow containers can also be filled, so don’t forget to use this space. This frees up room in the boxes you would have otherwise filled with the items. Ensure to leave some clearance if you think you may need to open the doors or drawers though.

Fill from the outside in

Line the walls the best you can, putting the more prominent, oversized items against the sides. By packing the outside, you have a better sense of the space you have left on the inside. As you make your way to the middle of the unit, leave an aisle for yourself so you can later retrieve any items you may want.
